Racing for the Cure

Treasuring Your Chest: 8 Ways to Locally Support Breast Cancer Research | Duluth Moms Blog

I’ll never forget my first “Race for The Cure” I ever participated in… My aunt lived in Peoria, IL and once a year my mom would pack the car up to head our family south to go visit. One year in particular our mom’s decided to sign us up to participate in Susan G. Komen’s “Race For The Cure”. Mind you, I was a mere middle schooler at this time and oblivious to the problems that may reside among my chest one day. My problems never drifted farther than an occasional pimple and bad grades.

There were so many pink bibs. Hundreds and hundreds of people had signed up for this race and the crowd was flooded with pink. People were in tutu’s and pink hair dazzled to stand out. Many wore bibs that stated “In memory of” or “Survivor”. My immature and sheltered self had not realized that there are hundreds of thousands of cancerous cases each year. The crowd represented women battling to save their lives, some battling to even save their breasts. According to the U.S. Breast Cancer Organization, “1 out of every 8 women will develop an invasive case of Breast Cancer throughout the course of her life”.

As I’ve grown older I learned to personally know and love women that fought or continue to bravely fight the fight against this cancer. My best friend went under the knife at the mere age of 18 to these related circumstances and it opened my eyes forever. I respect the organizations that are raising money to fund the research for a cure. I spend the extra money (especially) in October on anything pink that donates every little bit to the cause. Do you know or have known someone that had bravely fought? Tag them in this post to show women just how common this cancer is, and consider giving to help advance cancer the research. I have put together the Top 8 ways or organizations you can locally donate to help fund research for a cure that are near and dear to my heart. Let’s spread the word and help to save the Ta Ta’s.

1.) Minnesota Breast Cancer Coalition

How can you be involved? This organization is made up solely of volunteers. Many of the women who dedicate their time have been personally affected by Breast cancer. Help take action for the women that are currently fighting or about to be fighting this disease. Contact their legislators to advocate for more funding for breast cancer research or help work to pass legislation that mandates treatment coverage for uninsured patients.

2.) Hope Chest

Donate. Volunteer. Shop. There are many ways to get involved with Hope Chest. Donate your gently loved items of all kinds to the Hope Chest resale shops to help raise money. Proceeds from the sales will aid assistance to breast cancer patients and their families in our communities. Volunteer in their stores or at events they host. Last but not least, what all women love to do… shop! Shop until you drop with no guilt attached when you know it is all going to a good cause.

3.) Susan G Komen Race For the Cure (MN)

Make a donation or join in the fun with the Race for The Cure like I did. This 5k race is designed for all ages and celebrates survivors of Breast Cancer. Many wear outfits in celebration of their loved ones who were taken too soon. There is also merchandise you can purchase to help raise money and they are good quality. I’m pretty sure I still own the towel I got when I was a teenager from one of these races!
