Why Duluth Moms Blog?

It has been four years since we moved from the big city. The big city was the only place I can ever remember living. A comfortable place to raise a family in the quaint little suburban town of Apple Valley, MN it was. We loved our friends and our neighbors, and family was only a short drive away. I poured hours into refurbishing our 1970’s home and brought home three of our babies to this house. The home in which I had poured blood, sweat, and tears into. The memories, oh those memories. We started our family in that home, nursed sick kids back to health in that home, carved our names in trees outside the home, had neighborhood BBQ’s there, watched our kids grow lasting friendships there. Well, we did move, and it absolutely turned my world upside down.

I’m not going to lie, it was a rough transition. My adventurous spirit was put to the test. I desperately craved community and knew nothing of the resources my new city of Duluth had to offer. The daunting task of trying to find out where everything was located was overwhelming. Where does my family go if they get sick? Which dentist should I go to? Where are the moms groups? Walking trails and parks for the kids to play? Local music teachers? The best restaurants if I wanted take out? The list went on and on.

I moved WAY out of my comfort zone away from the neighborhood I loved, our family and friends, and the design business I grew from the ground up. It has not come without it’s challenges either. In this short time, I had a breast cancer scare, was diagnosed with two herniated discs in my neck and back, and had major surgery. The AMAZING people we have met and the sense of community we have felt has been like no other place.

So, what does this have to do with with Duluth Moms Blog? Actually, a lot. This summer, a friend approached me with the idea of bringing this resource to Duluth. I knew nothing of the blogging world outside of my design-blogging realm. A “moms blog,” I thought? How intriguing. A place where moms would come together and share their experiences about their journey to motherhood while providing resources to our city? It seemed like something Duluth was lacking. I loved the idea and moved forward by co-founding Duluth Moms Blog with my friend, Beth, the founder and owner of the established Twin Cities Moms Blog

Beth and I put out a call for writers and received an astounding number of submissions. Women from all different backgrounds applied. Younger moms, new moms, older moms, empty nesters, full-time working moms, blended families, moms that have children who are struggling with a debilitating illness, and a woman who is still waiting for the title of “mom” while navigating through years of infertility and the adoption process. Some had mourned the loss of a child, and others struggled with depression and anxiety.

As I poured over every.single.entry there was one thing in common. These woman want to share their stories. They want to connect with others. Community is healing and it is crucial to every human being. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be on this journey with you all. Duluth is my home now, and the people here have won my heart. Our family has put down roots here, and I am excited to share this new adventure with you. Our city has some of the best resources in the Midwest. At any given time, we can walk out our backyard and be surrounded by nature, and our kids are free to explore the beauty of the outdoors.

Great article, Stephanie! It took me a long while to feel at home here after I too, moved from a place that I loved. I’m convinced that had this resource been around at that time, it would have made a difference. Thank you!

Thank you Michele! I used to stalk moms at the park just to strike up a conversation when I was new here. Hopefully, we can provide tangible resources to moms who are craving community like I did!

I too am a transplant here and mostly love it, some winter days, not the cold so much. But I love the people I’ve met, the gorgeous surroundings and community! Thanks for putting this together, I too love women’s stories and empowering them to share them!

Super interesting blog! My husband just befriended a co-worker who moved to Duluth with his family one year ago. It is a brave concept to me to leave your neighborhood and network for a completely new location! Meeting people has been a somewhat daunting task it sounds like for the co-worker of my husband. So we decided to get together with this family and met at The Wednesday night Races! It was a like they were our Twin Couple! They had two small children, liked the outdoors, had similar taste in food and drinks, they even had many of the same home decor elements and toys for their kids. We have a lot of friends in Duluth as we have lived here for a combined 30 years! We both went to college here, started our first jobs here, and we are now raising a family here! I love Duluth, if not for what we have, but for what we don’t! We have so much to offer young families and I think this blog is just what this particular family could use to meet like minded people!!
