DIY: Simple Coatrack

Calling all ladies who want to complete a project and have it STAY that way.

Meals. Laundry. Cleaning. NEVER stay done. But this will! Let’s get our build on and make a DIY coatrack.

My name is Anna, and sawdust is my girl glitter. I started building just 3 years ago, and now it is my full time job. If I can do it, you’ve got this. But one thing to remember before you get started ladies: It will not be perfect, but it will stay done. Also, take joy in the journey. If this is your first time, and you are fumbling with that tape measure and the glue is getting everywhere…

Just breathe. Rome wasn’t built in a day. And your DIY coatrack may take two. Off to the races!

Here is what you need for tools and supplies:

Please note: Safety first ladies. Use all your tools properly (read the instructions) and wear safety gear.

  • Miter Saw or handsaw  (or a cute smile when you ask the Home Depot workers to help you)
  • Hammer and Nails or Nailgun
  • Wood Glue
  • Sandpaper or Palm Sander
  • Drill
  • Tape Measure
  • Screws for basket and hooks
  • Paint or Stain of your choice
  • 2 (1x4x8) pine board
  • 1 (1x2x6) pine board
  • Hooks
  • Word
  • Wire Basket

Now, onto the fun stuff.  Power tools.

  • Cut your 2 (1x4x8) boards into 6 equal lengths of 32 inches
  • Cut your 1 (1x2x6) board into 3, 19 inch lengths to brace the back
  • Attach with glue and nails

  • Sand smooth.
  • Finish with paint or stain of your choice.  I used dark gray spray paint.
  • Let dry, then sand again if you would like a distressed look.  I did!
  • Lay out your hooks, word and basket until they are just in the right space.

  • Attach the word with wood glue, and the hooks and wire basket with screws.

BOOM!!!  There you’ve got it.  You’re very own DIY coatrack.  Slap that baby up on the wall and pat yourself on the back.

Anna
Anna sheepishly admits she may be the messiest member of her busy family of six. Her patient husband Nathanael, of sixteen years, has learned to live with her messy downfalls. After meeting at UMD, the two were quickly engaged, and married a year later. Young and in love, they began growing their family. Before the age of 30, Nathanael and Anna had 3 biological boys and an adopted daughter; Isaac, Lincoln, Samuel, and Amilia Bailey. Take a step back into the 1950’s, and that’s what you’ll see in their Lakeside neighborhood. Families share meals and kids play pickup games of ball. Anna is passionate about building community like this, and investing in her amazing city! Now, back to the mess. Anna, is a creative to the core, and organization falls short on her list. Her teenage boys seem to keep things in order more than she does. Somehow in the midst of her creative chaos, Anna runs her own business making and selling re-claimed art and furniture. Sawdust is her girl glitter, and power tools her best friends. She is also is a singer-songwriter, and you may just catch her singing at the local pub or pizza place. Instagram Facebook
