I’ve been a proponent of holidays for my entire life. I love to decorate and I love to give little gifts to my special people and Valentine’s Day is absolutely no different. Christmas decorations come down; hearts and red and pink begins slowly making it’s way around my house.

I love sending out Valentine’s cards. I love the class list that comes home from school around the end of January. When I was in elementary school I loved making a “mailbox” out of a brown paper lunch bag and red hearts and paper doilies and glitter and then taping it on the back of my chair, anticipating the tiny envelopes and bits of candy that would show up in my bag by February 14th from my classmates.

When my oldest daughter was in elementary school, she always had a new shirt to wear on Valentine’s Day and a card and maybe even some chocolate to go along with it. Wrapped in red or pink paper, it was a Valentine’s themed shirt full of sparkle or hearts or something equally festive. Around the time Finn was 2, I implemented 14 Days of Valentine’s in our house. That year, Abby and Finn woke up each morning to a new little note and treat on the table: Donut you know I love you? You are the apple of my eye. You get the idea. Finn didn’t really get it, but he liked his little morning treat and Abby has asked yearly if we’re going to do 14 Days of Valentines. I don’t do it every year; there have been a few years – specifically the last couple of years with a non sleeping baby (who’s now a co-sleeping toddler) – that I’ve been tired and not feeling particularly creative after Christmas. There’s always been a Valentine’s shirt, but not necessarily a full 14 days of extra love.

This year, however, I’m rallying. In spite of all the regular life stuff, I’m back and feeling much more creative than I have in a long time. I’ve got 14 Days of Valentines back on the calendar. 14 Days of Funny Valentines, that is, because my 7 year old has discovered jokes and the loves them – a new joke each morning; maybe a little treat to go along with it (a fun pencil or a swirly straw, nothing extravagant) but something little to show my humans that they have my whole heart for my whole life. And you can be assured that there will be a Valentine’s shirt on the morning of the 14th!

Valentine’s Day gets a lot of grief for being a “fake holiday” or a “Hallmark Holiday.” I get that; shouldn’t we be able to say we love our people every day? Why do we need an actual holiday to “make” us tell those closest to us that we love them? The truth is that we don’t. We should be loving on our people as much in June as we do in February. But it doesn’t always work that way; and when we put “should” into our statements, it becomes just another thing we have to check off of our never-ending list and we don’t always remember on a random Tuesday in August that these are our people, the ones we share our best and worst moments with and that is worth celebrating with hearts and flowers. The random boring days are the ones we should be lavishing with extra love and hugs and kisses. We tell our people that we love them in so many ways other than a morning joke or a red shirt in February.

But, if you’re looking for something fun to do this year, if you want to lavish your small humans in a fun way leading up to Valentine’s Day, below you will find a printable of 14 Valentine’s jokes to share with your small humans. You could also cut out 14 red and pink hearts and tape one on their bedroom door each morning with something you love about them. You could create a list with them of 14 random acts of kindness that you’ll perform each of the 14 days leading up to Valentine’s Day. There are so many fun and easy things to do to add a little bit of extra fluff to your Valentine’s Day.

And if you do nothing else other than extra tight squeezes and a zillion kisses on February 14th, that will be perfect, too. Your humans know you love them. They don’t need anything else.
